Northwest Perioperative Internship Program

A full-time 17-week course offered semi-annually
 
Perioperative Nursing Interns: to attend the consortium classes, you must be an employee (nursing intern) of one of the participating hospitals.  Typically, an RN is interviewed and accepted into the program at a participating institution. The participating hospital may require you to work there for a specified amount of time after completing the program.

This course prepares the Registered Nurse for entry into
the operating room as a member of the surgical staff.

Classes in theory with skills labs and demonstrations.
Basic roles of the circulating and scrub nurse will be identified.
Preceptors will support clinical experience at the sponsoring home facility.

-COURSE DESCRIPTION:

—  This is a full-time 17-week course offered semi-annually.
—  This course prepares the Registered Nurse for entry into
            the operating room as a member of the surgical staff.
—  Classes in theory with skills labs and demonstrations.
—  Basic roles of the circulating and scrub nurse will be identified.
—  Preceptors will support clinical experience at the sponsoring home facility.

COURSE CONTENT:

1.  Didactic focuses on concepts of Perioperative
Nursing according to the standards, recommended
practices, and guidelines outlined by the Association
of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and utilizing the
nursing process. Examples of topics include:
— Safety issues (i.e., infection control, sterilization,
aseptic technique, patient positioning, etc.)
— Physiological responses (i.e., patient physiological
assessment, wound healing, fluid and electrolyte
balance, anesthesia concerns, etc).
— Behavioral responses (i.e., patient’s and his/her
family’s psychosocial and spiritual assessment and
considerations, etc.)

2.  The clinical portion of the course provides
opportunities to apply theory to practice. Coached by
their preceptors, the RN intern will first learn the
general circulating and scrubbing roles. They will then
be rotated into specialty areas such as General,
Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedic, Neurology,
Cardiothoracic, Vascular, ENT, and Plastic Surgery.
